Sam Mendes is trying to wear me down.

Sam Mendes has all the makings of a director I should love – but somehow I just don’t. Road to Perdition is one of those movies that I always “mean” to watch, yet never quite get there. I truly couldn’t stand American Beauty and Revolutionary Road looked good, but then negative buzz about the movie kinda killed it for me.

So I feel conflicted by this Away We Go trailer, which really and truly looks like a movie I would enjoy and really maybe even love. But I’ve liked all of Mendes’ trailers and really none of his movies.

Do you have filmmakers like this? Ones that you sense are good, read they’re good, feel that they’re good – but somehow you just don’t enjoy their films? Here’s the trailer (via Hollywood Elsewhere):

You know what? I really need to start seeing more movies. As in weekly or something. I simply just don’t see enough.

I feel that way about Stephen Daldry. He has only made three movies, but apparently they are good (The Hours, The Reader and Billy Elliot). I havent watched The Reader but I will probably because I cant resist Kate Winslets flesh. Damn my primitive mind!

I basically agree with both Mendes and Daldry. I also kinda feel that way about Stephen Frears (except, perhaps, THE GRIFTERS) and Wes Anderson. Their films just leave me cold and occasionally irritated.

I agree with all the names mentioned so far and let me add one more, Terrence Malick. How this guy got the kind of overheated, foaming- at-the-mouth raves for his torturingly boring films I’ll NEVER ubderstand

@Sergio: Yeah, I read a lot about Malick and for a guy with such a short filmography, he is quite a revered director. Honestly, I’ve never watched his movies and Badlands is one of those “I’ve always meant to see them” kinds of films that just never makes it to the top of the list.

@Ray: I’m kind of indifferent to Frears. Dangerous Liaisons, Grifters – yeah, fine, great. I think I’m probably the only movie geek who’s never seen High Fidelity. Another one for the list, I guess. And I can’t figure out what to think about Wes Anderson. Rushmore is spectacular, but I’ve become far less interested in his work ever since that. Bottlerocket’s been in my Netflix for months without coming close to the top.

@Scott: Yeah, I haven’t seen any of Daldry’s stuff. There’s just too many movies to see; who’s got the time for all the highbrow films AND everything that blows stuff up?
