A brief but telling glimpse into Burbanked’s childhood.

Actual conversation in the Burbanked house tonight: I was watching the 1971 Dirty Harry on AMC, and the movie had reached the sequence in which the Scorpio killer is sending Harry running all over the city in order to drop the ransom money. Mrs. Burbanked enters the room and sits down.
MRS. B
What’s this?
ME
Dirty Harry.
MRS. B
Oh.
She’s not a fan.
ME
I remember watching parts of this movie all the time when I was a kid, especially this sequence where he’s making the money drop. I never even knew what the movie was about, but I always watched this scene.
MRS. B
Really?
The scene reaches the part where Harry stabs Scorpio in the leg with a knive; the leg bleeds copiously.
MRS. B
How old were you?
ME
Probably not old enough.
MRS. B
Well, that explains a lot.

The first R-rated movie I ever saw in the theater was the first “Dirty Harry” sequel “Magnum Force”, which manages to be more violent than the original. I was seven.

Will you let the boys watch it without you?

Sulu: Nice. And would you say that seeing such movies at such a tender age has impacted your life? You’re not posting comments from prison, are you?
Megan: Oh hell no. I still haven’t watched any of the Indiana Jones movies in their entirety with them, despite their amusingly desperate pleas to do so. And while I’m sure that I’ll share selective titles with them LONG before the age I might have been when I saw such things, when it comes to more “realistic” violence like cop movies, I’ll probably wait a bit longer.
The fact is, I was monitored a lot less in my childhood viewing habits than they’ve been, so it’s hard to say what they’ll end up seeing and at what ages and so on. I’m just making this crap up as I go.

I quit posting from prison a long time ago.
But if you don’t introduce them to violent movies how do you ever expect them to grow up and become the kind of men who can hunt down, kill and field strip a moose? I think the solution here is twofold. 1. Show them these movies when Mrs. Burbanked is out running errands. 2. Teach them how to keep a secret. There. Wasn’t that easy?
