I’m too bored with this movie still to even use an Australia cliché.

I realize how unfair it is to judge any kind of movie property based on a publicity still, but I see this image from Baz Luhrmann’s 2008 Oscar-wannabe Australia (borrowed from Hollywood Elsewhere) and I’m already feeling sleepy.

I’m not a fan of Luhrmann’s anyway, due to the headache I’ve had since 2001 when I was about 10 minutes into Moulin Rouge and I thought, “Oh, no. The entire movie is going to be like this.” But this still - hey, look! It’s called “Australia” and it’s got two actors in it who are Australian! - just strikes me as displaying a profound lack of texture, personality, interest or character. It’s a pair of recognizable stars, dressed in costumes, trying to look…like what, exactly?

I absolutely Love Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet as well as Moulin Rouge, but I admit, what I’ve seen and heard from and about Australia really feels uninspired — even for a fan of the gentleman.

The picture says this to me: “We’re in Australia, that’s why I’m wearing this hat!”

I heart Baz Luhrmann. I’m hoping Australia won’t disappoint.

pacheco - Curse your constant open-mindedness! Seriously, BL is one of those filmmakers that I also feel like I’m not giving him a fair chance and that I’m supposed to like. I haven’t seen R&J, so I guess I should. I just could NOT STAND Moulin Rouge.
