If Steve Martin tells you how to be funny, your only answer is “thank you, Mr. Steve Martin.”

There’s a simply spectacular article – yes! An article, not a blog post! Imagine! – over at Smithsonian.com in which actor-novelist-playwright-comedian Steve Martin describes his early efforts as a comic in cross-country clubs and more than a dozen appearances on The Tonight Show before he felt he’d “made” it. I can’t tell whether or not this terrific four-pager is an actual excerpt or companion piece to Martin’s new autobiography Born Standing Up, but either way I’m sold. Martin’s a fantastic writer with just enough ego and self-effacement to make his musings utterly engrossing.

I think he is one of those people whose early work makes up for their latter day failings.

You get serious bonus points for the “Mr. Steve Martin” line, which I’m assuming you’re taking from the “5 Timers Club” sketch on SNL.

Good guess, Chris Tilth. That’s one of my all-time favorite SNL bits from back when the show still showed some surprise and spontaneity.
