Case file #4723: movie marketers are not allowed to think for themselves.

I guess I’ve officially been working with graphic designers too long now, because between my last article and this one I seem to be rather consistently amused by the fine, hard work of these unsung heroes of movie marketing. It’s about a month old, but check out this cool video by a designer who has seen about 480 too many movie one-sheets that use the same damn typeface over and over again and he’s just. had. enough:

It seems to me that once the WGA strike is over – you know, some day in a far away and fabled future time – that the studios’ graphic designers will be next to hit the streets, having had their efforts to introduce new and dynamic typefaces into the movie marketing lexicon squashed for far, far too long. The good news is, however, that their picket signs will be fantastic.

I think it’s a pretty decent font. And only a designer would notice – it’s plain enough that unless you put them side to side, it’s not noticeable at all. It’s not like it’s something obnoxious like Comic Sans.
