Bringing the “cute” with Wall-E - and which Pixar is your favorite?

sad eyes. turn the other way.I saw this new Wall-E teaser one-sheet over at both /film and Empire today, and it occurs to me that Pixar has never really marketed the “cute” factor in their movies quite so heavily as they are with this release.

That’s not to say, of course, that Pixar’s creations aren’t cute - because of course they are, and the design and aesthetic of their characters actually tend to completely transcend the usual standards of animated cinematic adorability. As paradoxical as it sounds, they’re much more like full, three-dimensional beings with hearts and minds and aspirations and beliefs, which in my mind makes them far more captivating as characters. They’re more believable, more real than traditional animated characters - i.e., old fasioned Disney ones - who tend to be just, you know, “cute”.

But Wall-E comes across quite differently, and I haven’t decided yet if it’s a good thing. Those big E.T.-like eyes and stumpy body; the common comparisons to Johnny Five*; the much-rumored accounts that large portions of Wall-E will be without dialogue, which means that the character will have to carry the narrative on his worn rubber treads and, of course, huge expressive eyes.

So: is the overt cuteness here a problem or not?

For whatever reason, seeing this teaser sheet (click it above to see a bigger version) led me to rate the eight Pixar releases in my mind in terms of which ones were my favorite and least. I tend to really love them all in different ways, but some I love more than others and at least one I’d throw to the bottom of the list.

I’m guessing you’ve got an opinion on this as well. After the jump, take a quick survey and rate the Pixar movies from your favorite to least.

I’ll apologize first for the formatting of this survey. It scrolls for miles, but I couldn’t find a WordPress survey plugin that worked the way I wanted it to, so this is what you get.

Each Pixar movie is listed below in order of release date. Rate each movie on a scale of 1 - 8, with 1 = your favorite Pixar movie and 8 = the sole loser in the bunch. Now this survey isn’t restrictive enough to know if you mark “5″ on all of them, so at least try to fill this out honestly and grant each film its own distinctive rating.

Now go rate the Pixar movies:

Toy Story, (1995)

Thanks for voting! If I get enough responses - like three or four perhaps - I’ll post the results at a later date.

*Are you effing kidding me? I know IMDB isn’t exactly the gold standard of accuracy, but they’ve got a listing for a Short Circuit remake next year. Oh my great Heimlich’s slime trail but I wish this idiotic remake trend would finally run out of gas.

Toystory ws the best. Rattatoille and Cars were the second best.
The rest sucked, including the snorefest Finding Nemo.

Carlo, are you a functional retard??? The Incredibles is an astounding achievement in nearly all areas.

Cars was their biggest misstep, in my opinion.

Wall-E is my most eagerly anticipated movie of next year. It looks like Pixar’s genius coffeemaker is percolating overtime on this sucker!!!

    Carlo,

    Cars is terrible.

I’m kind of with you Alan, this feels a bit like it’s trying too hard. We will see.

Cars was a big misstep. They redeemed themselves with Ratatouille. We’ll have to see what they do next.

Trying to choose a favorite Pixar movie is like choosing your favorite Beatle.
