Yes, Virginia, they’re actually shooting an Indiana Jones movie.

I know I’ve been a rather lazy blogger lately, and all the usual excuses apply: I’m busy, I’m trying to feed my family, I’m on the run from Colombian drug lords, you know.
But to not post a new picture of Harrison Ford tricked out in his Indiana Jones gear on the set of next year’s sequel – well, I could hardly call myself a film fan if I didn’t.
The picture, which I saw on ComingSoon.net via Fark, is sure to inspire discussion and debate today about how old Ford does or doesn’t look, or how appropriate the making of the movie is at this point, and whatever’s gone on with the script and whether or not it’s got frigging aliens in it and all of that.
But you know what? Spielberg is a damn smart guy, and the fact that he’s releasing this photo as the first official look at Indiana is, to me, an indication that he knows what’s at stake. True, there are other, more hacky factors at work, but I believe that Spielberg and Ford are going to strive against all odds to be faithful to the character and the story and to find an appropriate way to send Jones off into cinematic history.
As simple as it is, the weight of that picture encourages me. There’s a palpable feeling of wonder and joy seeing that fedora. It makes me hope, and hope is a good thing.

Yeah, I gotta tell you that Ford looks pretty damn awesome in that costume. And frankly, he doesn’t look nearly as old there as he did in Firewall.

Do you think that Ford can make up for – good God – nearly 10 years of average-to-craptastic moviemaking if he knocks this one out of the park?

When I saw that pic I immediately thought of this entry at the Awful Movie Database of one possible Indiana Jones sequel. I had to grip a pen in my mouth when I read this at work to keep from laughing out loud.

Holy s**t! I think I just came all over the keyboard when I saw that photo. In a way, the older, more weather-beaten that Indy looks, the better it is for his rugged, rough-and-tumble character. God, I hope this movie is good. I am REALLY looking forward to it.

I’m guessing in Spielberg releasing this photo, he’s preparing us for a different storyline. One in which he isn’t swinging from vines and crawling under moving cars.
Maybe not, but I’m sure as shit interested in seeing it.
