There’s news today that French filmmaker Luc Besson will be retiring from directing following the release of his 10th feature Arthur et les Minimoys on December 13th.
This is unfortunate news to anyone who’s a fan of Besson’s great action films The Professional and The Fifth Element (all snarkiness regarding Ms. Jovovich notwithstanding), but as we zipped around our beloved blogosphere today we found this excellent suggestion, courtesy of Nathaniel at The Film Experience Blog:
“And finally: Michael Bay is on his 7th picture and Brett Ratner is on his 8th. Can they please take Besson’s cue and bow out soon?”
We’d second that motion, Nathaniel, and add one extra: could Bay maybe quit now, before we’re subjected to another 10 months of this?

because clearly Cage has decided to become action/thriller cinema’s first Polish great-grandma. (
Well, that’s too bad. Back a year or so ago when I heard that they’d be making a movie out of Judi and Ron Barrett’s terrific kids’ book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, I hoped maybe it’d be made live-action. Handled well, the idea of seeing an actual town where it rained hotdogs and baked beans in an open-roof restaurant, as well as the bit where sanitation trucks clean up all the leftover rain/snow/food and feed it to the pets would be, I thought, a bundle of CG-imbued cinema fun.
