Trailer Week, The End – Spider-Man, 2001

It’s really a shame that Sony chose not to put the Spider-Man World Trade Center teaser onto the DVD the first time around. I can’t remember if this clip made its way onto any subsequent release – I really try to limit my DVD purchases to one copy per movie – but the teaser may very well show up again somewhere, someday.
Of course it’s a small heartache in a sea of misery that 9.11 brought a swift and decisive end to the distribution of this amazing teaser, but still. It’s unfortunate because this is truly one of the best movie teasers ever created.
It has everything you could want in a teaser: it’s quick, it’s filled with action, it gives nothing about the movie away and it has about the best visual punchline in history. It’s absolutely in the spirit of the character, the story and the message of the movie. And this amazing clip wasn’t even intended to be in the movie! For my money, that increases its value even more. That a filmmaker can create a sequence this terrific and have it stand independently – yet with such verisimilitude – from the movie is a rare and exciting achievement.
What’s more, this teaser told us what great hands the Spidey franchise was in. And the franchise has evolved and thrived, even if this poor teaser was destined to become a historical casualty.
Some days we’re so grateful for the Internet that we could just hug it. Hmmmmmmm.

I couldn’t agree with you more! I loved that trailer and was so sad that it disappeared.
I also never understood the wholesale removal of the WTC from movies that were coming out at that time – to me that made its destruction that much sadder. It was like people didn’t want to admit it ever existed.
