Pittsburgh might not heart Michael Keaton anymore.

because Batman says what's on Batman's mindWhen the city of Pittsburgh lays claim to celebrities whose humble roots were found in her old-world suburbs and hilly, mismatched streets, she does so with no small amount of pride. Stadium heroes there may be as plentiful as pierogies, but Pittsburgh chooses her pop culture progeny with great care.

Acclaimed actor Jeff Goldblum. Grammy award-winner Christina Aguilera. Film directors Antoine Fuqua and Rob Marshall (well okay, Antoine Fuqua). Beloved children’s icon Mr. Rogers. And yes, overflowing-with-loony Sharon Stone. These are the celebrities to which Pittsburgh can nod and smile with parental-like pride.

And until yesterday, that list included sporadically solid actor Michael Keaton. But how has Keaton suddenly become Batmana non grata, having been invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at this year’s Pittsburgh Pirates home opener?

‘Cause he disses the very team that invited him, waxing philosophic on the Pirates’ lack of dedication to building a roster that can, you know, win the occasional game:

“I think fans have been gracious. And maybe not vocal enough. Maybe not vociferous enough with their displeasure. That’s my opinion…I fear they will take advantage of the good will of the people who continue to show up,” Keaton said of the Pirates. “For my money, that’s disrespectful.”

Man, that just stings.

But still, Keaton has a point. And he’s no doubt speaking from the personal experience of being assaulted with popcorn kernels and Junior Mints by anyone who’s spent money on any of his movies since 1993.
