The Spidey fanboy community has been set all a-buzzin and a-twitchin over the new Spider-Man 3 teaser poster. And for good reason – it’s dark, dramatic and very, very cool. Additionally, major plot spoilers for the movie have leaked throughout the fanboy community. Can we handle the hype? Should we start our media blackout now before we learn too much?
No, probably not. Check out the new poster, the plot rumors and then completely forget about Superman Returns and X-Men 3 coming out this year after the jump.
The new Spider-Man 3 teaser poster is being exclusively featured at SuperHeroHype.com (we first saw it via Cinema Blend), and – as reluctant as we are to fan the fires of Hollywood Marketing Hype – let us just say this: wow.
Here’s the full image (there’s supposed to be a super-high-res version at SuperHeroHype, but we couldn’t get the thing to load. It must be more excitement than we can handle right now):
Now, the frenzied reaction of the Spidey-Fan community has already started bubbling messily throughout the Internets like boiled-over milk:
Bwaaah – it’s Venom! Spider-Man’s suit is black like Venom’s! It must be Veeeeeenoooommmmm!
Aaarrrgh – that’s no symbiote. Where’s the big white spider? That’s just a black suit. This blows! I hate Sam Raimi! My life has no meaning!
Noooooo – it’s too soon for Venom! That should happen in SM4 through SM7! What are they thinking?! They’ve destroyed my childhood! *hysterical sobbing commences*
Note: Fanboy comments have been recreated and edited for broadcast. For the most part.
Okay. Let’s just calm down a bit and agree to a few things:
- Sam Raimi and company know what they’re doing.
- Raimi takes some liberties with the source material, but he knows what he’s doing.
- From the advance materials created for the previous movies – the WTC trailer, the posters and the rest – we haven’t been disappointed.
- Spidey’s in good hands. They know what they’re doing.
- And oh, by the way, that is one kickass poster.
The Spidey-Posters from the other movies were light, colorful, heroic. This one evokes such darkness, defeat – perhaps even finality. It’s got a great sense of drama and the truth is, the strength of the Spider-Man saga is in the truth of the human drama that it represents. Peter Parker is more often than not a tragic figure, a guy who can’t catch a break no matter how hard he tries, how hard he loves, or how much he beats up badguys. This poster really conveys the sense of great responsibility that Spider-Man carries – and how it can come to weigh upon him.
And if this weren’t enough to make our silly fan-heads explode, there’s a lengthy bit of new Spidey plot spoilery to be found over at AICN. Much or even all of it might just be rumor or hot air, but be warned – there are major, major spoilers in their story. We read almost the entire article and we’re probably sorry we did.
If nothing else, this kind of too-early-to-be-this-exciting-hype sure does serve as a reminder of how high the Spider-Man bar has been set. Mr. Singer, Mr. Ratner – we hope you’re taking your assignments seriously.
