Get ready to knock down the doors no one else wants to - The Shield returns tonight.

shieldVic Mackey and his gang of wounded souls and societal misfits bring their own special brand of profane, FX-flavored ass-kickery back to the cable airwaves tonight for season five of the highly rated cop drama - and from various preview accounts, it sounds like the show is back in top form.

It’s true, you’re probably thinking (if you were reading this, anyway) that Burbanked is first and foremost a movie-related site, and you wouldn’t be wrong. But when episodic TV is as powerfully written, acted and directed as this, it’s important to sit up and take notice.

And it’s not just us talking about the season opener tonight. Here’s a selection of clips, from Left Coast to Right:

  • The Hollywood Reporter (via Reuters here) says that tonight’s season opener “leaves viewers stunned and breathless before the first commercial break.” That’s a bit too hyperbolic, but perhaps not unprecedented.
  • The Chicago Tribune heaps praise on the great, less-is-more acting chops of Kenneth Johnson (”Lem”) - although we might deduct a handful of tough-guy credibility points for the IMDB’s claim that Johnson “and Casper Van Dien are best friends.”
  • The Cleveland Plain Dealer claims that The Shield is a better show now than in its first season - which may help us forgive the reporter for also penning “The storytelling is just as arresting as it was in the first season.” (the emphasis, fortunately, is ours)
  • And The NY Daily News gives some narrative details - about three too many - about the investigative tactics used by Forest Whitaker’s character Kavanaugh.

All in all, it’s enough to make even hype-haters like us feel giddy and foolish with excitement for the show tonight. And yes, afterwards we might even check out the Shield Talkback at AICN that’ll follow to see what the diehard fans (as well as the potty-mouthed dorks) are saying.
